    CID only - recommendations?

I would like HS to announce the name of a person calling when the phone rings. I don't want the computer to answer the phone or interfere in any way with my dedicated answerphone.

Can HSP do that or is it an overkill for my needs? $150 (with modem) sounds a lot just to read the CID off the phone line so I'm wondering if there's a poor man's alternative to achieve this with HS? Perhaps a regular $50 modem and a plug-in or script?

    Thanks in advance.

Have a look at the netcallerID unit. Not sure it will work over the pond but it's only ~$9 and a $30 plugin makes a killer application for handling callerID.

        PhoneTray Free

        Gary -
Take a look at PhoneTray Free. That's what I use and it's great for blocking telemarketers as well (it sends them the disconnected tone that makes their machines take your number out of their list).
        Download it from http://phonetray.traysoft.com/freeca...e_features.htm

garygfx - The key is the modem, but you probally guessed that, search the UK forum, there are different ones people have used over the years but they are hard to come by.

I even called Multitech as thier web site states caller ID, however they only guarentee it on ISDN.

I use HSP and the HS PCI modem for me it's doesnt always work, but I still have a few things to try, new cable next.

Wow, what a great response! Thanks everyone, you've all given me a lot to think about. I wish I was State-side so I could buy a NetCallerID box for $6. I can't find any in the UK. I like the idea of it working over the network via Xap. Xap seems to be a bit of a "black art" so I'd have to get my head around it.

Those freebie tools that sit in the task tray are really nice (I just tried them) but my USR Sportster Message Plus doesn't seem to support caller ID, but I can pick one up on ebay for $30 or so.

                Thanks again, chaps!
