    Jon00 BBC Latest News (Incorporating Breaking News)

    This script will interrogate the BBC News web site for both the UK and World editions of the news and display the results in two virtual devices.

    Each virtual device will show a list of current headlines. Each story is preceded with a small graphic which, when pressed, will link to the relevant story (if available) on the BBC web site. This graphic will be displayed in red if it happens to be a breaking news story.

    In addition, two further virtual devices will be created, capturing the last breaking news for both the UK and world editions of the BBC news web site.

    The script can be configured to announce breaking news from either/both UK/World editions with various options including speech on/off times, background & pre-announcement music etc.

    As always it is available from my site. Please click on my banner below.

    Please post any comments/suggestions here.

    Hi Jon,
    many thanks for this.

    one quick question: how easy would it be to email the headlines?

    I have had a 'go' but I get all the html data with the headline using this

    news1=hs.devicestring("N17")
    hs.SendEmail emailto,emailfrom,title,news1

    ie

      All the news data can be found in the Jon00BBCLatestNews.ini in text format.

      You can choose the number of stories sent so you could do something like:

      news1=hs.GetINISetting ("UKNewsData","Headline1","","Jon00BBCLatestNews.ini")
      news2=hs.GetINISetting ("UKNewsData","Headline2","","Jon00BBCLatestNews.ini")
      news3=hs.GetINISetting ("UKNewsData","Headline3","","Jon00BBCLatestNews.ini")

      news=news1 & vbcrlf & news2 & vbcrlf & news3
      hs.SendEmail emailto,emailfrom,title,news

          Hello Jon,

          Great application. Wanted a change from CNN news/breaking news.

          Is there a way to change volume/TTS voice?

            I'm not sure what you are asking. The output is routed through the normal speaker clients. Do you want a different voice to that of your default speaker client?

              Hello Jon,
              Yes, I would prefer to use my English TTS voices for the BBC announcement and the option in the ini would be nice along with an option to lower the volume. I lower the volume on the CNN news alert. BTW have the BBC Breaking News (UK edition) set to off but it continues to play the wav file with no TTS. I am guessing that it shouldn't play both the wav file and TTS.

                  Thanks Jon.

                  Its appearing to me that CNN news alert writers are digressing some and looking for alternate "Breaking News alerts"

                      Working well Jon, great application!

                      On a side note I was lowering the volume on the CNN news alert kind of in a kludgy manner using a "volume" script before and after the event and noticed yesterday that one CNN event seemed excessively loud. Checking the event noticed that both volume events had disappeared from the main event. Re-enabled them and attributed it to hs gremlins.

                        Hello Jon,

                        I've seen the following only a couple of times in the last couple of days and not a huge concern; wondering if its related to current version of HS?

                        3/12/2010 8:54:56 PM Jon00_BBCHeadlines Error within Sub Main at block 5 (Conversion from string "" to type 'Integer' is not valid.)

                          I've just checked my logs over the last few days and there is not a single error from this script. I also run this every 5 minutes. Looking at the code, I cannot currently see how that error is being generated?

                          I'll keep a close watch over the next few days to see if I can spot anything.

                              That gives me a good lead, Thanks! I'll put a trap in for that which will stop the error.
