The RF PLM has failed to transmit

    Hi Mark,
Starting Friday my Insteon plug in stopped working. I started getting messages such as
"..Could not contact Interface on COM[]" and then "Interface_TrapError called from SendHex". Here is a log with the example:

Dec-10 7:05:18 PM Insteon Warning! Communications lost. Attempting to restart the port...

Dec-10 7:05:18 PM Insteon Interface_TrapError called from SendHex

Dec-10 7:05:18 PM Insteon The RF PLM has failed to transmit the last 10 commands.

Dec-10 7:04:31 PM Insteon The Insteon device at 1D.85.C7 did not respond. Please check to make sure the address is correct and that the device is powered-up. The device was not registered.

Dec-10 7:03:21 PM Device Control Device: Office Heater to On (100)

Dec-10 7:03:21 PM Event Event Trigger "Office Heater Office Heater Plug On"

Dec-10 7:03:21 PM Insteon Received Office Lights (23.B3.C0) Go ON

Dec-10 7:03:01 PM Insteon Interface successfully restarted.

Dec-10 7:03:01 PM Insteon RF PLM contacted on COM3 with an Insteon address of 41.05.23 and firmware version 9E

Dec-10 7:02:55 PM Insteon Attempting to restart the port and Interface...

Dec-10 7:02:55 PM Insteon ..Could not contact Interface on COM3

I tried a new PLM but no luck. I tried switching PLM cables, no luck. I tried switching Edgeport/1 devices with the working device that supports my alarm system but no luck. Also tried swapping port numbers. I even uploaded new Intel USB drivers onto my HS3 computer but no luck. The only thing that got me back up was to re-load the drivers for the Digi Edgeport/1 USB to Serial device that connects the computer to the PLM. I was about to declare victory but after an hour I started having the problem again.

Might you have any clue what it causing this? Or what I might be able to do to trouble shoot it? I'm using the 2413S and Edgeport/1, Windows 7, your latest Beta and HS3 Standard Edition 3.0.0.368 (Windows). It ran quite well for a long time. Something happened Friday that made this stop working, and it doesn't appear to be affecting other plug-ins, including ones that use the Edgeport/1.
    Thanks
    Jono

its sounds like something is going on with the Digi Edgeport/1 that is affecting the comm between hs and the plm. the plugin sets the com port to 115200, 8bits, no partity.
you don't typically need to set the port manually, but it might be worth a try.

do you have 2413U to try? and connect it directly to the hs server via usb

I don't have a 2413U, but at the rate I blow the PLMs I should probably get one. I thought they did not work as well as the 2413S, at least historically. Are they better now?

I did go into the Edgeport configuration software. The baud rate was set properly.

The problem occurs when there is a lot of Insteon traffic, like when polling or adding new devices. It may occur all the time proportional to traffic and high traffic events make it more apparent.

try this...shutdown the plugin, add the following to the insteon.ini, and restart

        the default FailMargin is 10

        [Tuning]
        FailMargin=15

I put all 3 lines in. I hope I was supposed to do that rather than just start with [Tuning].

Unfortunately it didn't work. Please see log below reading bottom to top. Happy to do a detailed log if it helps.

            Hi Mark,
I see the modification you suggested changed the number of missed commands before a reset to 15 as seen above:
"Dec-10 10:03:02 PM Insteon The RF PLM has failed to transmit the last 15 commands."
I just ordered the USB PLM which will arrive tomorrow. Since I am changing up the PLM I'm just wondering if that is the best choice, or would the Insteon hub be better?

              Jono,
I don't think the PLM is the issue.

I think there is a device flooding the plm which is preventing it from transmitting commands.

if you review a detailed log, you will probably see a lot of NAKs from the plm to the plugin when the plugin is trying to send a command.

I just changed the log to detailed logging and set a color code for the word NAK so it should jump off the page.
I cancelled my PLM order for the moment.
I supposed I could just go around the house and reset each device too. It sounds like you are suggesting a single device could be poisoning the system.
                  Thanks Mark

I tried just polling some rooms, rather than the whole house. Few devices poll correctly.
So I did another Reset and Reprogram. Even that shows a bunch of NAKs

I have several indicator devices that are set to blink when there is traffic on the insteon network. They are not blinking except when I know there is valid traffic. If a device was flooding the PLM, wouldn't my indicators be blinking all the time?

it doesn't have to be an insteon device flooding the network with valid msgs.

what changed on Friday when this all started? any new electronics added to the system? lights, ac adapters, new toys, etc

I would start cutting unnecessary circuits and retest and see how that goes.

I can't believe it! I unplugged the Christmas tree lights and everything is working again. I can now poll all my devices without the PLM resetting. Hard to believe that these lights could screw up the whole house! Thank you Mark for your insight into this!

My Christmas tree lights do the same thing. They have a little controller on the string that flashes the lights in sequence and that seems to put noise on the network. A filterlinc solved it just fine.
