    z-Wave Thermostat Recommendation (have 2-gig)

    Hi All

I'm looking to change my z-wave thermostat. I currently have the 2gig model with BLStat. Things I don't like are:
    • Can't control locally when paired
    • Schedule is only in HS, so doesn't work when HS is down
    • Doesn't report status, so have to poll to get current values
    • Value on T-Stat frequently different to HS

I originally bought it because I didn't have a c-wire, but I figured out where to run it from and now have one.

My philosophy with my home automation is to make sure all critical systems work if the server is off (lighting, heating, security)

    Features:
    • I'd like one where the schedule can be stored locally and uploaded, so it's easy to switch from normal to vacation if I go away for weekend.
    • I'd like to be able to override the current setpoint (so I can adjust heat, or turn on/off outside of normal schedule)
    • Must be able to control from HSTouch actions and scripts (when I set my alarm HS knows, so can drop the heating temp)
    • Would consider a wifi version as long as it can be controlled via HS
    • WAF > 7/10 (very subjective )
Not interested in anything to do with SchlageLink or anyone else who thinks they can charge me a monthly fee for this.

    Any recommendations

    Mark

I started with a 2gig, then quickly moved to a Honeywell TH8320ZW1007/U. I have two now, and so far I really like them.
It solves all your complaints listed except for one. While the room temperature auto updates, you will still have to poll to get the operating status and any changes that someone makes at the thermostat (mode, set temperature, ...).

Is the Honeywell a zwave device? Or wifi?

I wonder why the zwave stat don't report there status automatically? Seems that they all do the same thing, you have to make a event in order to have HS know there been a change

One of the recent changes to HomeSeer made it possible for the thermostat's temperature to be reported as it changed, without polling. I wonder if it's possible that a future change to HomeSeer could enable automatic status updates with no polling?

Unfortunately, the status updating is a patent owner by Leviton (if memory serves me correctly) so unless the thermostat manufactures want to pay the patent fee then it will not be added.

i can probably live with that. Will investigate the honeywell.

I'm assuming you have a 2-zone system if you have two?

If you are interested in the 3M-50 you can find information about the plugin in the BeakerStat forum here. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about it. You can also purchase the WiFi USNAP modules from Radio Thermostat and convert your CT-30s to WiFi.
