Noob question.... I see that an XTB-523 uses a rj11 jack to interface with a PC with HS3. What type of hardware do I need on the PC side? Do I use a serial port? If so, what is the pin out of the cable on both ends? Are there any other PC interfaces that can be used.....like USB?

Welcome to the forum Bugman1400!
The XTB-523 is a TW-523 device.
I am currently using Jeff Volp's two phased TW523 device with my Leviton OmniPro 2
It is just an RJ11 connection as I have redone my wiring going from cat5X baluns to old telephone wire.
See here for information relating to the XTB-523 and here.
You can plug the device in to an Ocelot and use GTS CPUXA Ocelot Plug-in (3P) for X10 control.
I have tested the GTS CPUXA Ocelot Plug-in to work fine with the TW-523 X10 device.Last edited by Pete; November 24, 2017, 09:28 AM.- Pete

The Ocelot is a combo AD and X10 and more device which has been around now for a very long time (~20 years).
Alternative is to utilize a CM11A or a Volp XTB-232.
I have two of Jeff Volp's X10 devices here that have worked fine for years.
I am currently using the CM11A with said above plugin and it works great.
I see a couple of CM11A's on Ebay for less than $20.
Mark Fisher (X10 author) Obi Wan has perfected the current X10 for Homeseer plugins. Today you can see much diagnostics on the plugins.- Pete

Serial Card vs. USB to serial
I'm also using the CM11A but I learned the hard way that you need to install a quality serial card in your computer. I had 2 different USB to Serial (RS232) adapters and never got things working 100%. After I installed the card, I have a very reliable X10 system.
Cheers,
Wade
