You can also install LV / HV LED flood lamps way up high that will turn your home surrounding yard to daylight. You wouldn't use these lamps for normal lighting.

You can find these today for less than $50 each. You can also run LV / 12VDC wires out from your home and stick a couple of the same type of LED lamps on a tree if you wanted to.

The work involved would be a PITA; then again you can install sensors and IP HD cameras next to the spot lights way up high.

For a daytime doorbell ring use Homeseer TTS / camera facing the door and an ID request from person ringing doorbell and generate a 30 minute dog barking and running and banging at doors around the house sound when you are not there.

If you are worried about a vehicle then just do a wireless connection from your vehicle to the house alarm.

Whatever; sight and sound work the best.

You can also go to the dark side (even with sight and sound nowadays) but I wouldn't recommend it.

I replaced our spotlights with GE Link bulbs on sale from Home Depot for $6 each. 6 x 150 watts to. 6 x 9 watts. They are simply timed for now. Eventually I will put motion detectors out there. My wife used to go out to the garage every morning and evening to turn them off/on.

well seems like I am going to be going backwards...
My wife has been on a permit tear lately. If you remember a few years ago I had a finished basement that she then wanted permits. So... that took 1.5yrs for me to redo with permits..

now for this cctv setup which is a boxed set...
it seems our TOWN requires a permit for this. Not sure why. He said only communications are exempt from permits thus I am going to take off tomorrow and take it to him to show him and ask again.

Then I am going to ask him for clarification on what is communication systems.

I will then tell him I ran Cat5e all over the house, Did I need a permit? I ran Cable TV around the House, Did I need a permit for that?
if he says YES.. Im ripping EVERY BIT Of it it out and my wife will not have tv in the living room. Ill then tell her to take care of it. Draw up the plans, get permits for what she wants and figure it out as im on strike.

And if he says yes to cable tv.. I took the splitter off the side of my house and ran it inside then back to a telco rack to a booster. ALL OF THAT WILL GO TOO...

so I took all HA equipment out... pc is out... next will be everything else...

she just called me to tell me I need to take my currently installed camera (3-5yrs ago) down as he is coming out soon as we are getting an above ground pool installed... really? does she think they pull every permit on a residence and walk around to see what you dont have permits for?

sorry for my rant. but WAF is not something I really care about much lately...

plot thickens.. i took the day off.. printed this out and taking it to him...

Chapter 8 of the National Electrical Code covers
the wiring requirements for communications systems
such as telephones, radio and TV antennas, satellite
                  dishes, closed-circuit television (CCTV),

If they want permits for all of the wiring I have redone in my house I want to know who approved what was there before. With the hot neutrals, daisy chains crossing circuits, and every other fire and electrocution hazard you can imagine.

so first reply in email from him was yes I need a permit... many replies back and forth me asking him if cable tv needs permit he replied..

no cable tv does not need a permit and nothing in chapter 8 of NEC either. so I looked and it turns out it is listed as exempt.

so I went down there to get my pool permit and asked him why cctv needs a permit as I showed him the code part. he said I misread the email as he said it doesn't need a permit..

he printed the email out and showed me the last reply from him but he didn't specify cctv exempt just cable tv.. so I flipped paper over and first line was his first reply that said..

Yes a video surveillance system requires a permit... so I called him on it and he woldnt agree he messed up.. oh well...

                          all good

Yesterday we had one mid day power surge and a very quick blink in the power. Everything is on UPS. Looks like the blink here took down the Axis 2400 video server and I had to reset it this morning. Nothing happened to the Zoneminder / IP cams from what I can see.

Historically I have seen power blinks doing weird stuff to the IP HD cams. (POE on UPS switches). Very rare.

I have yet to adjust one under eave camera angle. I didn't want to mount it on the eave/soffit because the over hang is just aluminium.

See attached picture. The support for the soffit is spaced apart. I would have had to build something between the soffit support by removing the eave there. Well that and doing this on a ladder up to there which is > 20 feet high (2 story). It was a PITA already to just mount the camera and run catxx cable in the attic to it. I have another camera which I went in to brick, through the garage and in a wall up a floor to the attic, then down the attic to the com closet. Took all day to run this cable and you do not see any of it (even in the garage).

I mounted the high up soffit cameras on the house brick/trim. I would have had to build some sort of structure to hold the camera in place. This is a bullet camera. The issue would be the same as using a dome camera.
IE: removing the ~ 2 foot plus eave et al.

If I align it on a horizontally I lose the view a bit which I do not want to do. Not really caring today.
