Max length on communication cable

This is a bit off topic, but what is the max lenght of the communication cable to a thermostat? I am currently using a homemade 30' cat-5. I am going to be moving soon and am trying to figure out where I can put the HS machine. My only real limitation is the Thermostat communication cable....

Anyone running a 50'?

What thermostat are you asking about? The official specs for RS-232 say 50', but it can be pushed further than that if you're using true RS-232 drivers and not the fake 5V version found on some PC serial ports.

I am using an Edgeport USB=>Serial interface. The Thermostat is an HAI. I did some measurements with string and I think I can probably keep it within 50 feet.
