Spud, not sure if this has been asked, but is there any way for this plug-in to support the iTunes Server on a Synology NAS? It too uses the DAAP protocol.

I never tested it, but as far as I understand , the iTunes server only streams music to other iTunes instances, i. e. it's not a player. The iTunes DAAP plugin can only control an existing player, it cannot play any music by itself. It's the equivalent of the Remote app on iOS; can you directly play some music using the remote app connected to your Synology?
An alternative that works with this plugin is forked-daapd, which is both a iTunes server and player, but I'm not sure if you can install that on Synology.
