    Rain8UPB Support

    Hello Spud,

    New HS3 user with an HAI Panel and UPB Equipment. I purchased your plug-in a few days ago and so far it has been awesome! I have a question about one of my UPB hardware items though. I have the Rain8UPB Irrigation controller which essentially is an 8-valve controller attached via a serial cable to a HAI PIM. I have it programmed in HAI and it utilizes UPS Units 145-152 for the 8 zones. Information on the product can be found here:

    Anyhow, the only way to add them to UPStart to allow them to be imported into the plugin is to add them manually as Appliance Modules. Essentially this fakes out UPStart and allows a one-way UPB Command for On/Off using the UNIT ID. There is no querying of the state using this method.

    The good news is that issuing an On or Off command for the Zone does in fact start and stop the sprinklers. The bad part is that the status icon does not change and the log is filling up with query error entries. Here is a log capture of the manual on and off commands for a single zone:

    There is a UPB Protocol for the device described here:

    It's a fairly simple device (basically 8-relays controlled by a PIM so no RS-232 wiring is needed).

    As a side-note, the HomeSeer RainNet plugin is not for the UPB Version, only the Serial based unit.

    Do you know if anything could be done with the plugin to either query the status or a small separate entry for non-UPStart imported items? A separate plugin? Curious if you have any ideas or thoughts.

    From what I read about this device, the problem is that it doesn't send ACK messages, which the plugin always expect. So if I add a way to let you mark these devices so that the plugin know it won't receive any ACK, it would probably fix the errors you see and make the status requests work.

    I will add it to my TODO list, but I will probably need your help, as it could be challenging to implement such a thing without being able to test it locally.

    Could you post the part of your .upe file where the fake Appliance Modules are defined.

        FYI, mcsSprinklers natively supports the Rain8UPB, however, this would mean that another PIM would be needed. When Oman was doing the HS UPB plugin we can communication about the HS UPB plugin providing a passthrough so the same PIM could be used by both, but it never materialized.

          Hi Michael,

          Thanks for the info. I would still like to see a Single PIM UPB solution since I am only controlling 4 zones anyhow through the unit. Without the COM Port sharing, the need to buy another PIM would make the endeavor not worthwhile. If I had more zones to control (Beyond the 8 capacity), a larger investment into sprinkling my yards would be more realistic. And...now that here in California we have mandatory water rationing and limited lawn watering rules, all of this sprinkler stuff is almost a mute point there too!!! Maybe an investment in the new realistic artificial turf will be the way to go?!?!?
