    Lost all Insteon Communications

    Hi,

I have a perplexing problem with 2 Fanlinc controllers and 2431u PowerLinc controller. A phase bridge is installed in the breaker panel. They have been intermittent at best over the last two years with typically all failed communication when 'test communications' was used.

The fans are located in a high valted ceiling, so difficult to get to. Today, I decided to do a factory reset throughout and re-initialize the FanLinc controllers and the PLM. Uninstalled the two FanLinc controllers in Homeseer, reset the PLM (held set button in after pluggin in until beeping stopped) and hard reset the FanLinc (most difficult and it took many tries with the Factory reset pattern of pushes and beeps). The debug code below was just for the PLM. After a couple of hours of trials, the FanLinc responded to the manual Add process from the Insteon plug-in. Both light and Fan devices were created and show errors. The plug-in shows no communications between Homeseer / PPLM / Fanlinc.

How do I determine where lies the problem? Is the PLM or FanLinc dead, or is there a link database error?

Are there any tools for determining Insteon pathways and checking devices?

House wiring is relatively new (25 yrs) and sound, so there will be no transmission errors. Lamps throughout the house are either compact fluorescent or LED.

As the system has worked on and off, sometimes for a couple of days at a time, I think it is hardware?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

    Steve

sounds like you have noise on the powerline or rf interfering with insteon signals.

compact fluorescent bulbs generate noise that will interfere with insteon msgs on the powerline. try disconnect these bulbs and retest

    LEDs should be fine.

other electrical devices can generate noise and impede signals as well.

there are no external tools for testing pathways or signal

there are several threads in this forum about tracking down noise

      Mark,

Thank you for your response. I will reduce the number of compact fluorescent lamps where possible and see if that helps. Over time, the large fluorescent fixtures in the garage etc. will get replaced with LED's, but there are no immediate plans for this right now.

All the PC's and electronics systems should not be contributing rf, as they are all running through UPS systems. Other than that, only regular household appliances on the 120v system.

Will update post if I succeed and solve the issue.

        Resolved

After much playing around, it seems that the plm only likes the outlet next to the main breaker panel. Not sure why as there are no filters etc. on the sub panels supplying the rest of the house.

At least it is working! and Plug In shows 100% for communications.

          Steve,
glad you were able to resolve the issue. if you run into this issue again, you might consider buying some filterlincs and putting them on the UPSs, your stereo equipment, etc.

          thanks for reporting back.
