    networking help

Ok so I know how to setup dhcp, I know how to setup static ip addresses..

but I have a question to see if this is possible.

right now I use dhcp and when an ip is grabbed I set it to the reservation pool.

    so my question..
is there a way to ONLY use reservation pool?
I would like to just only have our devices have an IP and use this. I like this because it sets the dns, proxy, etc..

sounds like I can create a scope of say
    192.168.1.1-192.168.1.2
    exclude both
then setup reservations of 192.168.1.10 and up... sound right?

I know hit is weird way of doing it but with me playing around with firewalls, etc makes life easier having devices get ip info this way... also my virtual environment... rebuild vms a few time and never have to set networking is one less step and helps..

This can be done, depending on which DHCP server you're using. See http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ts-4175473353/ for how to do something like you're looking for on a Linux system running DHCPD.

Here I keep a very small scope for DHCP (3 devices or so) on main LAN and use DHCP reservations outside of the DHCP scope.

DHCP scope is 192.168.244.250 to 253 on main LAN.

That said I have close to 100 devices on my network and most of them are static IPs. I do shut off my phone and tablets unless I am using them in the house and I prefer to utilize my laptops in the house over tablets - that is me.

Here too have multiple interfaces on my PFSense firewall. Two are for WAN connections which are used today for failover or load balancing. Inside are 4-8 intefaces used for physically separate networks. That said also use 3 24 port managed switches today for other stuff (like VLANs et al).

I create rules to talk between the physical networks here easy enough with PFSense.

IE: the Amazon Echo is on it's own interface to the internet, one Wireless AP is on a separate network, Almond + is on a physically separate network as well as today's Samsung Smart hub. (well my Leviton OP2 panel is also on a separate network).

I am not much of a cloud person even though I tinker with stuff. I do want to keep my automation dependencies in the house here. IE: weather comes from weather station. I do download weather maps from the internet but have configured a direct NOAA satellite connection via radio for downloading maps from the source.

Unrelated thinking my parrot is getting arthritis (she is 40 these days) as she was crying this morning standing on one claw (leg). She typically sleeps this way but never noticed any pain related to it.
