Open/Close Sensor questions

I have a couple questions about an Open/Close sensor i have:

1) it registers in the plugin as a triggerlinc, i asuume this is fine.

2) it does not have a battery status device, is mine set up wrong or doesnt this device support that?

3) mine keeps updating when there are no changes, example, it will report Closed every once in a while and updates the date-time of the device, it does this without the unit switching to an Open state so it does not show when it was last opened without triggering a virtual device.

1. Triggerlinc is fine. sh changed the name of the device but it did not coincide with a fw ver num, so i left the name. Newer units with device type 1009 are called Door Sensors

2. there is no battery status on these devices

3. check the log and see if you can find a msg from the device at the time of the update. some of the units have a heartbeat that sends an updated status value. the plugin does monitor for this

please post your devicetype and firmware version from the [device] section of your insteon.ini if you have further questions.

Thank you Mark, it does sound like the device is updating with the heart beat, which i guess is good, i can now drive a battery warning when the device does not update.

can you post your devicetype and firmware version from the [device] section.

also, can you post a few detailed log entries when the device is asynchronously updated

it is a devicetype = 1002 and firmware 40

going through the logs i discovered that one of my insteon motion sensors wsa linked to the device, and everytime there was motion off, it would update the time on the device. i deleted the link and will see what it does now.

any suggestion on a way to monitor battery life on these?

i don't think its possible with this devicetype. Depending on what you have it attached to, I suppose you could track the number of msgs you expect to receive on a regular basis, and if the count falls below your threshold, it may be a battery issue.

the new version (devtype 1009) sends a heartbeat msg every 24 hrs (in this format 00 00 04 Cx yy zz). so if a heartbeat isn't received then it may be a battery issue. the plugin creates a second hs device to monitor this.

I have a devtype 1002 on firmware 40 that is also reporting some type of heartbeat or bat value. I receive these in the Insteon error log periodically:

Of course there is no Grpnum of 4 so it throws the error. I've tried resetting and re-adding but clearly it is sending a message the plugin is not expecting for this device type. Any suggestions?

assuming you are using hs3, load the latest beta via the Updater. I just fixed this issue.

Looks like I spoke too soon, I must have missed it in the HS Log but it is in the insteon error report:

I put the device config below too:

Kevin, thanks again for the feedback.

This was a tricky one; smarthome has two different versions of the latest open/close sensor with a heartbeat. I have the other version which is a DeviceType=1009, FirmwareVer=3D

I have two of these TriggerLinc (aka open/close) sensors that register as devicetype=1002 and firmware=40. When I first add them they work (battery device so push set button, green blinking, add via Mark's Add Device option) After some time or possibly some event (PLM power cycle?), they simply stop reporting. I can open/close my garage fridge and freezer that I have them on (to keep track of people not closing them properly) and see the green LED blink on open and close. This happens both right after adding them when they are working and also later after the reports to HS3 stop. After they stop reporting, I change the single AA battery, no effect. I put them in linking mode and use the plugin to test communication. 19 or 20 results are successful. While the device is still in linking mode, I read links and it comes back with the two links for open/close and heartbeat. Yet, I still can't get it to resume reporting those open / close / heartbeat events to HS3. The only fix that seems to work is to delete them from HS3, and then go back through the adding device sequence. After that, they work again. Of course I have to go update all my events related to them as the underlying device id has changed.

If we have these older triggerlinc devices, are we simply stuck? I can only assume this is somehow an issue between the device and my PLM so perhaps this means firmware 40 is crap? I'd rather not shell out another $35 each ($100 for 3) to replace them just to get them working due to a better/newer firmware

Any options?

Nathan

Nathan,

sounds like maybe the links in the plm are getting lost. the next time this happens, put the sensor into linking mode, and use the 'program device for homeseer' and see if this fixes it. this rebuilds the links in the plm as well.

Thanks Mark. That is one of the steps I did try today before I resorted to the destructive delete then "add device" It's really strange that when it's not reporting status (no open/close/heartbeat) that I can put it into linking mode and use the plugin to test communications, read links, program for homeseer and all those functions report that they were successful but still the issue remains that no reporting is done. I did even try the plugin option to tap-add the device but them my PLM went unresponsive and had to unplug/replug it and restart the plugin.

Next time one or both go unresponsive I will first try the reprogram option and I'll see if I can't turn up debugging to see the communication that is (or isn't) coming into the plugin for these on/off devices.

BTW, I am on the release version 3.0.6.0 of your plugin. I see 3.0.6.38 in the beta updater but don't have any reason to try that unless there's something in there you think might help.
Nathan
