My Dot is quite affordable at $50, the Google Home is less so at $130.

Still not clear on this. Does one need an internet connection for this, or can it communicate thru the LAN?

Google Home is cloud based and similar to the Amazon Alexa relating to digital assistant functions.
Both devices transport to the internet is via your home LAN to WAN router.- Pete

I'm curious to why you say end of echo. In your mind why is google home better? I have only bought one echo dot so far because I wonder which one is better. Also wonder what apple will come out with.
