Anyone using a Home or Home Mini with POE?

I've got 1 Mini and I think I may get a couple more (besides my 3 full size Homes), but I want to ceiling or wall mount them. I've found some mounts on Etsy, so not a big deal there.

I do want to power them via POE (Power Over Ethernet) though. I'm not really concerned about the network connection, just data (though I hear they work with usb ethernet adapters, so could add that to the mix). Is anyone doing this?

To be honest, I found some OTG ethernet adapters (which let you inject data and power into the Mini. So that would work. I'm kinda wishing someone would make one of those adapters but instead of a USB for power in, just pull the power from the Ethernet cable, (basically a POE to -> USB with data and power).

This what you mean? I've had my eye on this.

Yeah, exactly. I use one for my Z-net.

What I think would be great is if a company would make a POE -> USB OTG adapter. This way you could feed power and data via Ethernet into the adapter and it would feed it to the Google Home*, Home Mini, or Chromecast. I know I could do it with multiple pieces, but that would be 3 adapters in wall to accomplish it. Something Like this:

      Code:
        POE Ethernet cable
                |
                V
           POE Splitter
                |
             ---------
            | |
          Power Ethernet
            | |
            | V
            | USB Ethernet Adapter
            | |
             --- ---
               | |
               V V
        USB OTG Power Y Cable
                 |
                 V
             Home Mini
It would be nice if a company combined all 3 of those adapters into 1 with POE in on one side and Micro USB out on the other.

I also saw this recessed mount for a Echo Dot and Have already emailed the company to see if they are planning on making one for Google Home Minis. Looks like a great idea!

I think I'm going to buy the 3 adapters to try it, but it's $30 on top of my $30 Google Home Mini. I also wish they had an audio out. I would love to tie this into in ceiling speakers like I was gonna do with my Echo Dots. It just makes sense and why they left that option out I'll never know.

Here are the parts I'm gonna try:

POE Splitter (5v) - I have a multi port POE injector already so only need the splitter:

        USB Ethernet Adapter:

USB OTG Power Y cable (note how the plugs are):
        https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...NYPID4YT&psc=1

Note that I am basing this all off of how you do the chromecast Ethernet without using the official ethernet adapter (which I could do in this case if I didn't care about the POE and just wanted data).

        More on that here:

Note that I own multiple chromecast audios. I will probably just buy some of the official adapters with Ethernet for those.

Edit: I changed the POE splitter. I like Wifi-Texas stuff, but it was twice the cost of the one I'm gonna get and try.

I just ran across this and I think this is pretty nifty if you have an extra recessed light you aren't using (or don't mind installing one). I like that it plugs into the Googe Mini as well.

So, I got all the parts in and I'm happy to report it works (I didn't have very much reason to believe it wouldn't as it is a combination of 2 popular "hacks").

            I did find this:

            https://smile.amazon.com/Amazon-Ethe...hernet+adapter

I have one ordered, but it doesn't ship until January for some reason. If this works, then you only need that and the POE adapter, which is a bit more easier to manage, but in the end, costs the same. I've seen Ethernet adapters that work for both Fire TVs and Chromecasts, so my assumption is that they have drivers for the same Ethernet adapter chipset (CC only works with one).

The ultimate device would be the Amazon Fire adapter but with Built in POE support.

So, I did my "occassional" search today on this and found this on Etsy:

              https://www.etsy.com/listing/5629062...0aAoSvEALw_wcB

Not bad. I wouldn't use it for a ceiling mount unless I did an enclosed box above it (Which if I did, I would do anyways to hold all the POE stuff).

did my occassional search on this again today while waiting for a meeting to start and saw this:

                  https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I ordered 5 (for $50). 1 is $15. They come with extension cables as well, but not sure I'll use them (as I will be using PoE adapters and the like). I ordered the Etsy one and while it was ok, I had to spend time sanding and painting it. I'm hoping these, since they are manufactured will have a much nicer finish to start. My only concern is their pressure fit. If you have to remove it and put it back in a few times, I could see that not working out very well. Reviews so far are good.

Those tabs are a sure bet the Mini will find itself dangling at one point. What a terrible design!
