    What happened to Onkyo?

years ago while I was growing up... always wanted that stereo rack with the tall speakers... you know.. turntable, dual cassette deck, huge EQ, etc...
Onkyo was always a great system but I could only afford Fisher and via a used market.. hah...

so years go by and I end up buying a Harman Kardon avr-65. 5.1 surround system with Harman kardon 4" satellite speakers and an 8" sub. Worked great.
I would put on Matrix and the scene where Neo is on the helicopter with the Gatling gun... I could vibrate the whole house.

well after time, that receiver bit the dust and I was up for a new receiver.

I thought long and hard and Pioneer and Onkyo were the two that plugins were being created for. I sat back and said.. well I have an Onkyo amp that feeds multiroom 2 so I ended up getting a TX-NR708.

since day 1 ... whatta piece of crap. Same scene and I cant get the kinda sound I used too out of it. Since HK drives amps vs watts... my speakers were low watts and ive been blowing them all out. I need to buy nicer speakers now but....

since owning my receiver it has broke twice and it appears this second time it will be fixed out of warranty just like the other time.

it has been sitting for almost 2 years now because it is broke and I just don't have the cash to go out and get a new receiver and not sure what to get if I did..

anyway will be calling 9am est to see if it is going to be fixed under this current service bulletin...

so original bulletin that it was fixed under...

I had the same problems with Onkyo.

    TX-NR807

HDMI board was the problem. I had it repaired out of warranty twice.

    Both time it failed again.

$830 piece of junk that I kept chasing with good money.

My basement theater was out of commission for a while, while my warranty was expiring. I probably only got about 40 hours of use on that receiver before it stopped working.

    So mad.

I should give that a shot too... at the very least they will have to pay to ship it out of my house and that'll make me feel a little better.

Maybe I should fill the inside with ear wax flavored jelly-beans

I have a number of Integra devices (Onkyo's sister brand). 2 of them suffered the HDMI board failure (the issue was due to was bad chips from Texas Instruments). Both were replaced. One with a like for like model, the other was upgraded to the current generation of the same model. My AV guy handled it all. including getting a replacement overnight shipped to replace the one in my primary media room. He shipped the failing one back in the box.

It dealt Onkyo / Integra a big blow and the returns/replacements cost them dearly, both in $$$ and in reputation. Onkyo was available all over the place including the internet, but Integra used to be sold only through authorized integrators. It appears they're trying to recoup their losses with volume and now Integra is available through distributors and the integrators lost their exclusivity (and margins). My AV guy is not happy with them.

so she finally answered and her words were.. your receiver was serviced in 2015... sorry nothing we can do for you.

so I was ticked and had to leave work anyway so I left...
just called back and the lady said yes they only do 1 free repair... really.. yeah on their support page it says..

We truly care about our customers and our product .... yeah that is a fictitious line..

so lady told me to go fill out and it will give me options for trade in or something... and great I get.. This unit has already been submitted/serviced for this program.

                  well gonna call back...

                    I have 2 TX-NR636 (2014 model), 1 TX-NR609 (2012), Integra DHC 60.5

DHC - HDMI board failed twice - If anyone wants it for parts it's yours!

The 636's have issues with the NIC/web server. I use both Blade's BLOnkyo PI and the Onkyo mobile app to control amp. Both the PI and the app will stop communicating with the AVR. This occurs weekly. I can access the receivers web GUI so I know it is still online, but it will not process commands or send updates. Only way I found to repair was to unplug the AVR completely. These AVR also suffer from HDMI handshake issues from time to time. Through customer support I exchanged one of the AVRs. The replacement suffers from the same issues.

If I was incline to rewire my equipment rack, it would not include any Onkyo products.
